A gate valve is a valve with a gate (or wedge) as the closing member. The gate's movement is perpendicular to the fluid flow direction. Gate valves can only be fully opened or fully closed; they cannot be used for throttling or flow regulation. Gate valves achieve sealing through contact between the valve seat and the gate. The sealing surfaces are usually hard-faced with metallic materials to increase wear resistance, such as hard-facing with 1Cr13, STL6, or stainless steel. Gates can be rigid or flexible, resulting in rigid gate valves and flexible gate valves.

There are many manufacturers of gate valves in China, and the connection dimensions are mostly not unified. They are mainly divided into the following categories: 1. Valves manufactured according to JB/T2203-1999 "Structural Length of Gate Valves", a mechanical ministry standard; 2. Valves manufactured according to GB/T12221-2005 "Structural Length of Metal Valves", a national standard; 3. Valves manufactured according to ASME B16.10-2009 "Face-to-face and End-to-end Dimensions of Valves", an American standard.
Gate valves are divided into wedge and parallel types according to the structure of the gate. Wedge gates have three structures: single gate, double gate, and flexible gate.
Gate valves are also divided into parallel gate valves and knife gate valves according to their structural type.
Manual gate valve working principle: By rotating the handwheel, the valve stem moves up or down via the screw thread connection between the handwheel and the stem, raising or lowering the gate connected to the stem to achieve opening and closing.
According to the body/main material classification, gate valves can be divided into:
Metal material valves: such as carbon steel valves, alloy steel valves, stainless steel valves, cast iron valves, titanium alloy valves, Monel valves, copper alloy valves, lead alloy valves, etc.
Metal valves with lining: such as rubber-lined valves, fluoroplastic-lined valves, lead-lined valves, plastic-lined valves, and enamel-lined valves.
Non-metallic material valves: such as ceramic valves, glass valves, and plastic valves.
