Development history of China's electric actuator industry for valves

Before 1965, China did not have valves electric actuator products, nor did it have any specialized manufacturing plants. At that time, China's main valve users: the power, petroleum, chemical, metallurgical, and water supply industries, etc., were generally small in scale, with low operating parameters and low levels of automation. Most used manual valves. Therefore, only a few large factories, such as the Tieling Valve Factory in Liaoning, the Shenyang High-Pressure Valve Factory, the Shanghai Valve Factory, and the Harbin Boiler Factory, produced large valves and equipped them with a simple device consisting of an ordinary electric motor driving a worm gear box to open and close the valves, in order to solve the difficulty of manual operation of the valves.

At valve sites, people would tie a long lever to the handwheel to open and close large valves, with several or a dozen young men lined up, pushing the valve open or closed like a millstone.

In October 1964, with the development of China's national economy, valve users increasingly demanded higher parameters, larger sizes, and automation. The requirements for valve product types, specifications, parameters, and automation levels became increasingly stringent, and demand continued to grow. Under these circumstances, to meet the needs of China's valve industry development, the First Ministry of Machine Building decided to establish a valve research room within the General Machinery Research Institute, the general machinery industry's coordinating institution, to unify the planning, design, and research of China's valve industry development.

After the establishment of the General Machinery Research Institute's valve research room, it attached great importance to the research and development of valve actuator products. In January 1965, after the General Machinery Research Institute's valve room dispatched comrades Hong Miancheng and Li Wangshun to Tianjin for investigation and research, it decided to designate the Tianjin No. 2 General Machinery Factory, which originally produced small high-pressure autoclaves, as China's first specialized manufacturer of valve actuators. At the same time, it was decided to establish a joint design group for valve actuators to carry out design work in Tianjin (historically known as China's first joint design of valve actuators). The joint design group was headed by Li Wangshun of the General Machinery Research Institute, with members including Xu Yuxia and Yao Dingxiang from the Beijing Design Institute of the Ministry of Chemical Industry, Zhu Xiaoxian from the Beijing Design Institute of the Ministry of Petroleum, Zhao Zhende from the Fushun Design Institute of the Ministry of Petroleum, and Xiang Meigen from the General Machinery Research Institute.

In the first half of 1965, the joint design group completed the design of three models, B, C, and D, with a maximum operating torque of 1200 Nm. In December 1965, the Tianjin No. 2 General Machinery Factory completed the trial production of these three models of valve actuators.
